On a tip we received from one of our readers who goes by the name of Marco, we contacted the Customer Support department at the Head Office of Linamar Consumer products today.

When I asked if the information provided in the tip was accurate, I was asked to contact the firms Media Relations department.

When I asked the person at Linamar Consumer Products Media Relations department if the information was true, I was forwarded to the assistant to the President.

When I asked this third person, I was told that there was no comment other than what had been sent specifically to the Guelph Mercury newspaper.

The tip? One of our readers advised that production of the Solaris, Epic and Utopia electric lawn mowers, with the optional solar charging station, had been stopped.

According to the article in the Guelph Mercury newspaper, product of the Solaris, Epic and Utopia electric cordless lawn mowers has indeed been effectively shut production down for the season.

The reason given to the newspaper by Linamar’s chief executive officer, Linda Hasenfratz was a supplier related issue:

“It was a supply issue as opposed to a technical issue; the lawnmower continues to be a premium product in the market.”

The article continued to state that the future of the product is under review.

DailyHomeRenoTips.com has received numerous comments and complaints from its readers on the, preceived or otherwise, issues with the battery retention for the cordless electric lawn mower.

In fact, we needed to purchase a second pair of batteries ourselves just this year, sooner than what we had expected.

Part of the issue may be the markets expectations for the relatively high price for this line of lawn mowers at $400+ (excluding the optional solar charging station) vs corded electric lawn mowers at up to 1/2 the price.

Part of the issue may be the consumer expectations who have never experienced battery operated electric lawn mowers.

Part of the issue with the life expectancy of the batteries by the consumer may be the absence of a manufactured or expiration date on the batteries themselves as reported here earlier this year.

The Guelph Mercury article quotes a company spokesperson that they are continuing to fully support the product.

“A person can either go back to where they purchased the lawnmower or they are welcome to contact our consumer products division and someone there will help them,” Bowman said. The toll-free number for Linamar’s consumer products is 1-866-857-1445.

Time will tell where we go from here.
