Dobbies Garden Centres welcomed its first customers to the £8m Garden World at Carlisle today (Friday 22nd July 2011) – marking the launch of the company’s first centre in Cumbria.
Local pupil, Holly Howson, age 9, from St Michael’s Primary School cut the floral ribbon to open the centre with the help of celebrity gardener, Chris Beardshaw, after Holly won a competition to design an eco-garden – which will be created at her school with help from Dobbies plant experts.
Chris Beardshaw said: “I am so pleased to see the children here today from St Michael’s Primary School – their design ideas and enthusiasm to engage with plants and the outdoor environment is heartening.
Beardshaw also remarked on the Dobbies “Here We Grow” project which offers free equipment, and expertise to help local groups to get growing: “Community projects such as the ‘Here We Grow’ programme are vital to bringing opportunities and support to our schools, community groups, and charities and I am really pleased to see businesses such as Dobbies investing in our gardening future.”
James Barnes, Dobbies chief executive, commented on the company’s newest garden centre which is designed to work in harmony with the environment: “We are delighted to open our newest centre in Carlisle which we believe is a concept for a new-generation of garden centres in this area.
“The Garden World is in keeping with our provenance and heritage as expert horticulturalists since 1865 whilst providing a modern destination for today’s consumer. We’re looking forward to welcoming our first customers to Carlisle, who we hope will love Dobbies and our new-state-of-the-art centre.”
The Carlisle Garden World also houses a Farm Foodhall offering locally-grown produce from the area, as well as a top-quality restaurant, with freshly-prepared meals and home baking. There is also a specialist pets and aquatics department and stylish outdoor living and gifts.
Built with natural construction materials such as a timber frame, and other renewable energy systems such as grey water recycling, Carlisle is Dobbies’ most environmentally-friendly store in England.
Dobbies in Carlisle has also appointed a community champion, Hayley Berry, who will be responsible for building links with local communities through the Dobbies ‘Here We Grow’ campaign which offers free equipment, support and expertise to the local groups, schools and charities to get growing. Hayley will also manage the Dobbies Little Seedlings Club which encourages children to take an interest in gardening.
Dobbies in Carlisle will welcome customers this weekend with an array of inspiring and exciting events – from gardening demonstrations, to face painters and a jazz Sunday lunch, there is something to suit all visitors.
All events will take place at Dobbies Garden World, Orton Grange, Carlisle, CA5 6LB. For store opening times or enquiries telephone 01228 713520 or visit Dobbies online.
