You’ve probably heard the rumor that mosquitoes will home in on the smell of most colognes and perfumes, and sadly, that rumor is true—though there do seem to be some exceptions. While we haven’t tried it yet, apparently 4711 Eau de Cologne, a classic German scent popular in Europe, will repel mosquitoes. Some people actually use it for this purpose. Why this cologne repels while others attract is a mystery—unless the ingredients are heavy on citrus oils and similar scents, which mosquitoes loathe. That’s why citronella as a natural repellent works so well.

If you really want to avoid mosquito bites while you’re enjoying the outdoors, wear dark clothing that covers as much of your body as possible. Don’t wear perfume, cologne, or scented deodorant at all. It’s best to be as clean as possible, too, because some types of mosquitoes zero in on lactic acid on the skin.

But fair warning: mosquitoes can also sense the carbon dioxide that you breath out. So they will find you. As a final line of defense, a mosquito trap, repellent spray, or mosquito repellent granules (or a mix of the above!) is always a good idea when you’re outdoors for any length of time.
