The Woodland Trust is encouraging people all over the country to put on their wellies, have some fun and raise some money in the process.
The ‘Give It Some Welly’ campaign is set up to help the Woodland Trust double the native tree cover in the UK. More trees mean more homes for wildlife and more places for us all to enjoy.
On March 4th 2011 you can either attend an event in your area or put one on yourself.
All you have to do is put on your wellies.
You can wear your wellies anywhere, be it at your salsa class, a dinner party or you can simply get sponsored to fill your wellies with custard wherever you stand. But whatever you end up doing, wellies are compulsory!
The Woodland Trust will then use all the proceeds from the ‘Give it some Welly for Woodlands’ events to create valuable habitats for wildlife, and to protect our ancient woodland.
Woodland cover in the UK is currently over 12%, whereas in the rest of Europe it’s 40%. Out of the UK’s woodland cover only 4% is native broadleaf, and that’s the stuff that provides vital homes for more threatened species in the UK than any other habitat. The money you raise can help the Woodland Trust increase that cover.
To give you some inspiration here’s a list of what your fundraising could achieve:
• £10 could plant four trees. • £33 could protect half an acre of existing woodland. • £50 could provide a pack of trees for schools. • £150 could help a community to start a wood. • £2,000 could provide a school tree planting day where hundreds of children can have fun planting trees and learning about the priceless habitats they create.
Whether you go round the office with a welly to fill it up with coins, host a welly football match, or even a welly fashion show, you can help a really good cause and have lots of fun at the same time.
If you need more encouragement, there’s even a chance your welly efforts could win you a family break in a DoubleTree by Hilton hotel.
